Sage: 3 years old
Sage has hydranencephaly. This is when the brain doesn’t fully develop before birth. She has her brain stem and a small section on one side. The congenital absence of the cerebral hemispheres in which the space in the cranium that they normally occupy is filled with fluid. Sage was only supposed to live a couple hours after birth. She turned 3 years old last October. It was a miracle when she could suck when she was born. She continues to drink from a bottle. She is on all solid foods that are blended up. She digests normally. She did have a shunt put in her head when she was 2 months old to remove some of the fluid from her head. Before that the fluid did cause her skull to enlarge. Her body is normal size for a 3 year old while her head is the size of a 9 year old. This causes her head to be too heavy for her to lift. She cannot sit up on her own or roll over. She does not walk or talk. She does smile and even laugh, which is another miracle. The doctors said that she would never do such things. They said that she would not recognize people and yet she does respond to people especially those closest to her. She has a sweet disposition. She does have medications for seizures and for sleep aide.
